More Matthew Swift?

So I’ve been asked this question on a regular enough basis now to make me think I should maybe… you know… answer it.

Will there be more Matthew Swift books?

And the answer is…

… drum roll….

I have no idea.

Now, before irritated eyebrows start happening, let me take this opportunity to say that I’d quite like there to be more Swift books.  I’ve got plenty of ideas and there’s plenty of stuff still to be done there.  Swift still appears in the next book – the Glass God – and I’m in no hurry to close any doors.  However!  There are Other Things also going on.  For example there’s

mysterioussecretprojectI’mnotallowedtodiscussatallonpainofdeathsodon’tevenbotherasking

and all of its ilk, which is eating up both a lot of words and time, as well as a large part of my publisher’s concentration.  That said, there’s also the ongoing adventure which is the Matthew Swift movie, which is still being pursued by a scarily awesome producer in Hollywood about whom my agent, with awe and terror in her voice, admitted ‘cautious optimism’.  Which is incredible, as the rule with ANY film of ANY book ever, is you always assume the absolute worst.  ‘Cautious optimism’ is, therefore, a huge step forward.

However, until a bit more time has passed, secrets revealed and more words negotiated, I’m afraid I still can’t say.  I genuinely don’t know.  Which is an infuriating answer, I’m afraid, but I figured… no answer at all would probably be EVEN more insufferable.  If only just.

Well, that’s. not the answer I was hoping for. I’ve just finished reading “Stray Souls”, which I liked a great deal, and passed it on to my wife, who also likes it. So, the question of whether and when there will be more is an important one. But, you’re the one who has to write the books, so you get to decide, and since it sounds like you’ll be writing something, our basic needs for your writing will still be met.

I would love a Matthew Swift movie so so much, if they did it right. Would you be very involved in the process, with the script?

Thank you for being honest enough to give such an answer. Frankly, I think I’d enjoy anything you wrote, whether with Matthew Swift or Kite, or anyone else. Also, I know that it’s very possible to attempt to eke out far too much from one character or world, which tends to lessen the overall enjoyment. Write whatever you think best, and thank you for being up front with us about this question.

A secret project! You just want us to squirm, don’t you? But I suppose in the meantime I can tide myself over knowing you have more than one book in the wings (including The Glass God, natch). Can’t promise I won’t go insane trying to guess what it is, though secretly I hope a certain scientist is involved, because, ah, hope springs eternal… In any case, good luck!

Obviously, I’d have preferred “Yes and it’s out next week!” as the answer… actually my books to read pile is getting a bit out of control so a few months notice might be better ;-)

    Anyway….

I loved Stray Souls (guest starring Matthew Swift) so The Glass God (guest starring etc) ticks the boxes for me!

And I’m all intrigued by the super secret project now.

This all sounds very exciting. :)
I would also like to say that as much as I love Matthew S (and I really, really do!) I have yet to read one of your books I didn’t like. So, as long as you’re still writing I’ll read whatever you produce! :-)

I’ve already got Glass God on pre-order, from about a month or so ago; I like to keep up with these things…

Hmmm, that’s strange, I wrote a lot more in that last post, but it vanished!
    How peculiar!
Now I’ve forgotten what I wrote. Something about whatever direction your writing takes you, I’m following, having read everything that you’ve written under your two names, without exception.
I’d like to think, just possibly, that as well as the new, nameless project, there might, just possibly, be a new Horatio Lyle book sometime.
One request, when Glass God’s launched, if you do a signing, can you give a wee bit more warning, please; I need to book time off, and I’d like enough time to be able to book a cheap train up to London… ヅ
Thanks Kate, and good luck with the movie project, and the new book project.

I am very pleased for you that there are lots of good things (secret and otherwise) going on at the moment. However (am I allowed an however?) I would absolutely love at least one more Matthew Swift book. I know, greedy, greedy!! But his is such a unique and intriguing character that I feel there is a lot more there to tell and I would love to read it.

I am minded to say that if it came to a choice between a book and a film I would go for the book. In my head, where the story takes place when I read, Matthew Swift, et al, is the person I see doing things the way I imagine he does them. In a film it is someone else’s pictures and chances are they won’t be the same as mine.

For your sake Kate, I hope you get the film deal. Then you can give up the day job and write books all the time.
