Kinda just jumping on a bandwagon here, but Todd Akin? ‘Legitimate rape’? And the female body can shut down a pregnancy just by wishing it hard enough? Frankly, the world and its mother is currently kicking up a stink on this one, but I figured, you know, some things are just so astonishingly dumb, so breathtakingly stupid, myopic and offensive that just this once, I wanna join in the universal cry of, ‘really, Todd Akin? Really? You wanna run for high government office why?’ Ah, scary stupid Republicans. Does anyone else wonder if they’re only in the running to make us believe that all the other bonkers candidates, are almost normal…?

It was a serious “Wait, what? No, seriously, WHAT?” moment.
Although, I’m not sure how far off some of the other candidates he is. I mean I’ve heard other US politicians express the “No abortion under any circumstances” viewpoint before, it really seems to be not that out of the ordinary.
OK, Todd Akin attempted to justify that in possibly the most offensive and ignorant way possible but still…
I think I’ve just managed to scare myself. *sigh*

It’s this kind of thing that almost makes it worth reinvesting in a Tier1 visa.
I mean, it’s nice to watch them open their mouth and shoot themselves in the foot… but if they actually get elected?
Time to go.

Maybe I’m just fluent in Moron, but I think I know what he means by ‘legitimate rape’, in the context of his anti-abortion stance: I would guess that he’s trying to say ‘when you have a legitimate case of rape – as opposed to an illegitimate case of mere abject poverty or fear for the physical health of the mother and/ or unborn child…’ but of course he’s then staying ‘still not good enough…’
And the female body having a way to shut down pregnancies? No, you’re thinking of kangaroos. Prat.

From my point of view, the problem with the words ‘legitimate rape’ is that a common defense used in rape cases is that ‘she consented’. In the context in which Todd Akin used it, the interpretation I had was that he was saying ‘legitimate rape’ as compared to ‘a woman protesting a bit and shouting and that, but actually kinda wanting it’ which is one of the single most offensive views that can be offered in rape cases ever. Rape is rape. It has a very clear definition and to put the word ‘legitimate’ in front of it demonstrates a huge ignorance and insensitivity.

I wonder if an alien species will come to Earth an demand we all commit ritual suicide. Foolish words and actions stain all of us.
