Well, I certainly wouldn't argue that BG a bit...po-faced at times, and does take itsself a little too seriously at times, but the overall themes and the politics, combined with the human issues, and a weird machine religion thrown in for good measure has made BG a truly compelling series, showing a level of sophistication largely missing from TV sci-fi. A great ensemble cast also helps, as I mentioned in the West Wing blog; it's something that America just seems to do so well, and they're not afraid to use actors from all over the world, either, the number of Brits in American TV astonishes me sometimes, I've watched some series for ages before belatedly discovering that the actress with the broad Brooklyn accent is actually English, or the 'Irish' actress in another actually comes from Middlesex (Gabriellle Anwar in Burn Notice).
I love US TV series...
