Oh, and sorry about your camera, but think of it as an opportunity to go and invest in a shiny new example of the latest photographic technology. Plus Christmas is coming...
If I may make a suggestion, if you can afford it, either the Olympus Pen, or even better the Panasonic equivalent, which I think is the L1, which are compact size cameras, but with changable lenses and DSLR size sensors, would be perfect for the sort of unobtrusive photography that you seem to prefer.
