This post moved me to tears. As a born and bred South African, I know that it's far too easy for us to become jaded with the dark side of the country - my first reaction upon seeing District 9 was that of violent dislike, the fervent wish that people would just let go of all that bad history already. They've beat it to death with countless movies and books on the subject. With all the crime, the HIV, the corrupt government and cultural diversity that is often so hard to surmount, a lot of South Africans have become so immersed in the depressing mire of the state of things that we very often find it hard to see anything positive about this country at all.

Which is why this blog post was so incredible to me. Seeing my country from the eyes of such a talented author really gave me a different perspective on it - made me see with new eyes the absolute beauty of the green streets of Jo'burg and the majesty of the mountains just over the hill. Thank you, thank you, thank you - not only for writing A Madness of Angels, which has become my favourite novel of all time (really!), but also for writing this wonderful post.

+1 Jess. At risk of getting boring and repeating myself, your travel blogs carry so much atmosphere about a place that vivid pictures just run in the readers' mind like a travel movie, a talent I've only really appreciated in Bill Bryson's work, but to my mind, you do it even better, possibly because you are a writer of novels, which require the author to 'paint pictures with words'.
I totally agree with your opinion of District 9; unlike any SF film I've ever seen, and totally unexpected. The sequel is going to be very interesting indeed...
